The Quad Cities Football Club Men’s National Premier Soccer League Team kicked-off the 2013 season with back-to-back road victories this weekend.
Saturday night, the Eagles squared off against the Eau Claire (Wisc.) Aris Football Club in neutral LaCrosse, Wisc., winning their season opener 3-2.
Tirelo Morake struck for the Eagles 10 minutes into the game for the team’s first goal of the year. Aris FC later tied things up on an Eagles own goal. Things remained quiet until the 70th minute when, Miguel Lafarerra, a United Township High School senior, scored for the Eagles. Laferrara then went on to notch the game winner in the 78th minute following brilliant run and header. Eau Claire scored in stoppage time, but it was not enough to stop the Eagles from taking all three standings points.
After the game when asked about the team’s performance Laferrara, who was named “Man of the Match” said, “I thought we controlled the game and the team played well as a unit.” Laferrara, a seventeen year old from East Moline, Ill., plans to begin his college career next year at the University of Dubuque.
Coming off of the hard-fought win Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Milwaukee to play the renowned Bavarians Sunday afternoon. The Bavarians started off their season Saturday night routing the Minnesota TwinStars 3-0 in Minneapolis.
After another scoreless first half, Eagles midfielder Eddie Garza knocked-in the game winner seven minutes into the second half following a slick pass from Javier Bautista. Garza put in the insurance goal in the 58th minute and Bautista finished things off with a goal in the 83rd minute. Yves Dietrich started in goal and kept an impressive clean sheet, making some vital early saves.
“Getting these first two wins on the road has really put us in the driver’s seat,” said Albrecht who is starting his third year as captain of the Quad City Eagles. “The difference was getting a total team effort. The first game of the weekend, the younger players stepped up and played their roles and in the second game against a more seasoned team, the veterans showed their quality.”
The Eagles home opener takes on historic significance as they host the Blau-Weiss Wiehre Football Club from Freiburg, Germany, at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at the Davenport Soccer Complex, 8991 North Division Street, Davenport, Iowa.
Tickets are available on the Quad City Eagles website; www.quadcityeaglesfc.com or at the game. Ticket prices are $7 for Adults, $5 for kids 10-14 and children 9 and under are free with a parent.
